The Weekender: 10 holiday presents under $25
December 11, 2015
“It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas,” and in between studying for finals, you may find yourself gift-shopping for your friends this weekend. In the spirit of the season, I have created a list of gift suggestions. Without breaking your budget, here’s ten gift options to add some holiday cheer to the lives of whomever you treat with a present.
1. Jewelry
From a female perspective, receiving jewelry tends to be a sweet surprise. Add a personal touch by gifting your friend a monogram necklace, like this one from Urban Outfitters.
2. Sprinkles Cupcakes and Nothing Bundt Cakes
Bakeries around San Diego like Sprinkles Cupcakes and Nothing Bundt Cakes sell individual treats great for giving out to friends for under five dollars. Festive flavors like chocolate peppermint, vanilla peppermint, gingerbread and red velvet make for an easy present already packaged and ready to give out. With edible gifts, it’s best to pick up your cupcakes or bundt cakes the day before you want to give them out to ensure freshness.
3. A Notebook and Pen
Notebooks make for a simple gift that serves several purposes for whatever your friend chooses. You can find plenty of neat designs at stores like Paper Source and Urban Outfitters, plus you can add a pen on top for a useful, yet decorative, touch. Shop one of my favorites here.
4. DIY
Add a personal touch and make your own gifts to hand out to your friends. Whether body scrubs, cookie mixes, or hot cocoa jars, “Do It Yourself” gifts are thoughtful sentiments. Packaging those gifts in mason jars with a festive ribbon around the rim adds a nice touch of thoughtfulness and class. Pinterest is home of loads of ideas on what to make, plus the recipes and instructions you need to follow through with your gifts.
5. Ornaments
A go-to gift that can adorn the top of the gift or stand alone, ornaments are a festive way to celebrate the holiday season. Party popper inspired ornaments like the ones pictured from Anthropologie are filled with pompoms and bells that you can shake, but other fun ornaments can be found at most stores you shop at around town.
6. Hair Ties
These stylish hair ties double as simple bracelets girls can comfortably wear around their wrist when they’re not in their hair. One could easily find hair ties like the ones pictured at Nordstrom, Urban Outfitters, Whole Foods, or Anthropologie. Or, this ponytail holder adorned with a velvet bow from Free People is another option.
7. Bake!
In my opinion, receiving a homemade treat is not only exciting, but displays a level of thoughtfulness and care. De-stress this weekend by whipping up some homemade treats to give out to your friends or teachers, like classic iced sugar cookies or these red velvet santa hats. Cookies are a simple treat to package in cellophane bags with a ribbon; however, homemade cupcakes work just as well in a small box.

8. Socks
With a uniform, socks are one way to express creativity, so gifting a new pair to a friend may be fitting. Try these ruffled socks from Free People.
9. Pajamas
Help your friends stay stylish and cozy this winter in a new pair of pajamas. Mix and match a set, like the shorts pictured from Aerie, for a present that your friend can enjoy for many nights to come.
10. Books
With free time on winter break, a new book to read is an excellent gift. Depending on your friend’s personality, one of these books could work. Wrap your book up with ribbon, add a candy cane on top, and your gift is ready to give out.
