El Sol has been providing students with a way to get their art, literature, and photography published since the beginning of UNI / Cathedral Catholic history. The magazine features all student work including short stories, poetry, art, photography, and 3-D design art. Anyone who would like to submit an original piece to the magazine should do so by March 10th.
“I think it [El Sol] gives the kids who are creative the opportunity to be published for the first time and show their work to a wider audience. It also allows us to discover a lot of hidden talents in our audience,” said Mrs. Laurie Allari, El Sol moderator.
All submissions must be given in to Mrs. Allari in Assisi Hall 211 or emailed to her. You may submit as many pieces as you would like; however, the El Sol staff will decided which pieces will be published in the magazine. The magazine also features an 8th grade competition where students from certain middle schools can submit their writing and art to Mrs. Allari; the winner will be published in the magazine.
The El Sol staff encourages creativity and self-expression, yet cautions students with their selection of what to submit because the El Sol staff will look over all the submitted work before it is chosen for publication; however, this rule should not discourage students from submitting work.
There will be a contest open to senior artists for the cover of the magazine. The winning artist will receive a free copy of the magazine when they are distributed in May.
If students do not wish to submit a piece of literature or art, but still wish to be a part of the El Sol family, they can be on the editorial staff. All are welcomed to join the club. All they have to do is come to the club meetings every Red 1 at lunch in Mrs. Allari’s room.
Mrs. Allari said, “The club is more about learning design and having input into something they are creating. The more students that come, the better the final outcome will be.”
So if you are a writer, an artist, or even a club enthusiast, El Sol would be a good fit for you. Stop by Mr. Allari’s room or email her at [email protected] if you have any more questions.
