The annual Close-Up Washington D.C. trip, a one week workshop promoting the democratic process, is set for June 10th to 16th 2012. Economics and Psychology teacher Mrs. Christi Harrington is in charge of the trip.
The program is a one-week workshop that allows students to submerge themselves in the political process and meet Washington insiders, political leaders, and lobbyists. Students will also have the chance to visit monuments, museums, and memorials.
Mrs. Harrington suggests students go on the D.C. trip for multiple reasons. “It’s an excellent way for students to experience government in action,” she said. “It also allows them to explore a city rich in history, tradition, and culture.”
She said that memorable highlights from past years’ trips include meeting Congressman Brian Bilbray, touring the Pentagon, viewing the Korean War Memorial, and seeing the monuments lit up at night.
Mrs. Harrington said that participating in the D.C. trip will help students with both history and government classes.
“Juniors taking U.S. History who attended the trip will be able to have a new appreciation for the significance of certain events and be able to connect to the material personally,” she said. “Seniors taking Government will have first-hand knowledge of the three branches of government and how they interact, as well as be more informed about current events and take an active role in being able to participate in the voting process.”
Eight students have gone on the trip the past two years.
The price for the trip includes airfare, hotel, fees, three meals per day, and program materials.
Students interested in signing up to participate may see Mrs. Harrington at her classroom, Assisi Hall 203, where she will provide them with the information necessary to register. Students and parents with questions may contact her at [email protected] or by extension x1286.
