Eyes wide and trembling in fright, students all appear scared of the dog and her owner walking through the school. It seems strange considering when outside of school most students love animals. So why the sudden change in character? This is because this isn’t just any dog, this is a trained “drug dog.”
Common misinterpretation for this dog is that she only finds drugs. This fact is wrong, and truthfully, this trained labrador, named Cady, knows to alert her owner not only with drugs, but with alcohol, gun powder, and most medications.
Interquest Detection is the name of the company Cady’s owner, Tonya Anderson, works for. From speaking with her, she made it clear that the reason for the drug dog is to be a deterrent for students who think they can bring these illegal substances on campus. Also, the random timing of the appearance of the drug dog keeps these students always aware and on their toes.
However, Ms. Anderson wanted the students here at Cathedral Catholic High School to know more about Cady outside of these gates.
This very smart 6-year-old dog only took three months to train, which seems incredible; however, this three month training program is intensive as these drug dogs are sent off to a facility to learn how to detect these illegal substance.
In Cady’s spare time she loves to run, play, and stalk cats. So, when you see this dog come on the school ground, do not be afraid. She is just here to ensure the safety and well-being of the school.
