Cathedral’s Guitar Club has joined with the newly organized Ukulele Club to provide an even bigger on-campus environment for music appreciation.

The joint club is led by senior Taylor Bondi and junior Nick Salcedo and meets every Friday in Mr. Jeff Owen’s room in downstairs Assisi Hall.

Taylor said, “The Ukulele Club allows students to get together and play music. It’s pretty casual and always fun. Sometimes a member brings food for everyone.”

Depending on the week, Mr. Owen’s room will be full with Ukulele Club members on Friday’s at lunch.

Taylor said, “We tend to have anywhere from ten to thirty kids per meeting. It has really grown this year. This is probably due to the greater interest in the ukulele instrument.”

The Guitar Club was always open to the playing of multiple instruments. Students have brought bass guitars, drums, and other instruments in the past.

Over the course of the last few years, the Guitar Club has accumulated money from the carnivals and club weeks. Taylor said, “Now that we are joined with the Ukulele Club, we really are more determined than ever to accomplish our long-term goals. We want to donate some money to purchasing additional instruments for students who don’t have some of their own to bring. Also, we would like to purchase instruments for kids who cannot afford them outside of Cathedral Catholic.”

Students of all different musical abilities attend the meetings. Taylor started playing the guitar in the eighth grade and began the ukulele last year.

“We sometimes get students who have never even played before. It does not matter if you do not think you are any good. I recommend absolutely anyone come check out a meeting.”

If students don’t get around to making one of the Ukulele Club’s meetings, they can look to see and hear some Ukulele Club members playing at the next club week event.

“We not only bring food, but we bring our instruments,” said Taylor. “And this year, we will have even more ukuleles.”
