Students can often be seen walking around the Cathedral campus with big bulky guitar cases. Many recognize Mr. Tim Foley from Praise and Worship in Mass once a month, but what a lot of students don’t know is that, aside from playing guitar and leading the school in Mass worship, Mr. Foley also teaches Cathedral’s guitar class.
Mr. Foley said that, thought the class is mainly focused towards beginners and people with no experience, advanced and experienced guitarists are also welcome to try it out.
“Guitar isn’t all about just having fun,” he said. “Although we do have a lot of fun in the class, it’s about learning the basics of guitar and music theory, and it’s also about learning to be comfortable with your guitar.”
“People think guitar is nothing but a free period because it is fun, but they think that because it really is different from the other classes,” explains Mr. Foley.
Senior Guitar student Jessica Solis said, “Guitar’s a lot of fun. It’s a lot different from all my other classes, and it’s a nice relaxing break in my day from all my structured classes.”
As someone who has been playing guitar for more than a decade, Mr. Foley said, “If you want to try something different, join guitar, not only because it’s fun, but because music and guitar are healing, and they will change your life. “
At the beginning of every class, the students spend time in meditation. It’s a time for them to become centered and focused, and to spend some time with God.
Even if students feel guitar or any instrument doesn’t seem to be their gift in life, they are encouraged to join guitar class, even if just for a day. After all, as Mr. Foley said, “It will change your life.”
