Cathedral Catholic is home to a wide variety of student bands and musicians. One such band is indie rock band Mister Wister.
Cathedral junior Spencer Schneider (drummer) and his four friends, Bryce Montgomery (lead guitarist and backup vocalist), Sam Evans (bassist), Dan Jacobs (rhythm guitarist), and Clay Wilson (lead vocalist) make up the band. Two of the band members reside on Wister Dr. in San Diego, which is how they came up with the clever name “Mister Wister.”
“We’ve all been playing our instruments since early middle school, and have been playing in different bands up to this point. We ended up joining together recently,” said Spencer. “In the past nine months or so, we have won and placed in a couple of battle of the bands tournaments.”
Mister Wister’s sound is indie rock, and the members’ influences include such bands as Red Hot Chili Peppers, Modest Mouse, Of Mice and Men, and Skrillex, a currently popular Dubstep band.
Regarding what the songs are about, Spencer said, “They are about normal stuff, mostly girls, friends, relationships, things we don’t like, and ghosts.”
The band’s future in music looks promising with their rise to fame through shows at the Epicenter, Queen Bees, and Soma. But just in case something should give this high-energy band the blues, they always have their band mascot and dog, Rush, to come home to.
