Mrs. Amy Balelo is a new addition to Cathedral Catholic’s teaching staff. It’s her first year at Cathedral, and she is looking forward to a great teaching experience.
Mrs. Balelo is originally from Louisiana, where most of her family still lives. She moved to California because she wanted to attend the University of San Diego. After college, she decided to stay in California to earn her teaching credential.
Mrs. Balelo has been interested in teaching at Cathedral since she completed her studies at USD. Much of her husband’s family attended Uni., and her niece and nephew currently attend Cathedral. She said teaching at CCHS reminds her of her time in Louisiana “…because it feels like one big family.”
She previously taught at Mater Dei Catholic High School for six years. She did her student teaching at Granite Hills High School.
When Mrs. Balelo decided to become a teacher, she knew she wanted to teach English because it was, and continues to be, her favorite subject. As a child, she enjoyed reading and writing. She said, “Since first grade, English has been my favorite class.”
She also enjoyed her English class in her sophomore year of high school. “Although the teacher was strict, she made English class enjoyable with the various creative projects she assigned,” said Mrs. Balelo.
She said, “I like teaching high school students because I feel as though I can connect with them better than with other age groups. I also love seeing the change in them from freshman to senior year.”
