James Morris, a sophomore at Cathedral Catholic, is working to balance a music career on top of high school life. Though he is only in tenth grade, he has already released three albums and played many shows all over San Diego. He is a singer and songwriter with big ambitions and serious talent.
Since his freshman year, James has been improving his musical talents and skills. “It’s constantly growing,” said James in regard to his music-related life.
He is working to make his voice heard all around the San Diego community by playing “a bunch of little local venues.”
James also said he wants to start playing more acoustic shows because they’re the most intimate. He is always looking out for inspiration for his music. “I’m inspired by everyone I listen to,” he said. He bases his music off of personal life experiences.
Even though he is inspired by bands such as My Chemical Romance, Linkin Park, and Simple Plan, he tries not to be exactly like anyone. He said he’s not trying to portray any certain band exactly.
This year, James has begun using his talents to give back to the community through various charities.
He is currently helping the 411 GINA charity. “They raise awareness about missing people,” James said. “I’ve been working really closely with them on the Squeaky Wheel Tour. They’re gathering artists and using them on a nation-wide tour.” The Squeaky Wheel tour is a series of concerts that raises awareness for people who go missing every year.
Besides working with the 411 GINA, James is beginning his very own charity. “I’m starting my own called Songs for Peace,” he said. This charity focuses on urging new artists to help raise awareness and funds for peace.
James has two acoustic shows coming up on April 5th and May 7th at the House of Blues.
Though it seems like it might be stressful to balance a music career on top of a high school life, James seems to be doing alright. “Every now and then it’s overwhelming,” said James,.“But the natural high that music gives me…I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”
