This article is part of a series focused on this year’s motto of Unum: Engage, which highlights how students engage as one in different groups across campus.
Boys baseball season is in full swing here at Cathedral! The boys have been putting in the work showing up with focus, energy, and a clear love for the game. They are currently 7-5 and they are committed to the team’s growth every day.
Sophomore first baseman and pitcher Jose Partida offered a look into what a typical afternoon on the field looks like for the team: “Practice usually starts at 2:45 with a warm-up that lasts about 20 minutes,” Partida explains.
From there, players break off into partner-throwing drills before focusing on their specific infield positions. “That helps us focus on the details and build chemistry between each position,” Partida said.
To make things more game-like, the JV team often steps in as runners, creating live scenarios during fielding practice. After about 30 minutes of defense, the focus shifts to offense.
Players rotate through different hitting stations, starting in the cage with tee work, followed by machine pitching, and then live batting practice on the field. “After hitting, we go to a station with Coach Priest for footwork, bandwork, and conditioning,” Partida explained. The team finishes up by shagging balls in the outfield and infield before cleaning up the field to wrap up practice.
Coach Remiker expresses how the drive and determination behind the team’s performance isn’t something that has to be coached. “The motivation comes from the players themselves more than it comes from me,” Remiker said. “The players want to perform well, the players want to play a lot.”
Whether it’s fighting to keep a starting spot or earning more playing time, he says the internal competition keeps the energy high and is the base of the motivation for the players. “They take a lot of pride in what they do, so I don’t have to do a lot of motivation,” Remiker added.
Senior Diezel Hernandez talks about the goals as the season progresses. “As a team, we have put in tons of work so far into the season, so I would say our main goal is to keep building momentum, stay locked in mentally, and to show what we’re capable of as a unit,” Hernandez explains. “No matter if we win or lose, we want to walk off the field knowing we gave it everything.”
The team is committed to playing hard and ending well as the season progresses. These players’ enthusiasm for the game is evident whether they are on the mound, at the plate, or in the dugout. We cannot wait for what the rest of the season has in store for the boys.
