Cathedral Catholic High School junior Jackie Garcia defeated Serra High School opponent April Ranches yesterday at the Country Club Rancho Bernardo to capture third place at the City Conference Match Play tournament. “April is one of the best players in the state,” Garcia said. “When I am at tournaments in the summer, she is always finishing first or second. So, to beat her as our team heads into CIF next week really gives me a big boost of confidence.” With the match all square after five holes, Garcia sealed the victory by draining a 25-foot putt to put her 1 up, a lead she would not relinquish the rest of the match. San Diego Charter School junior Stephanie Fernandes won the event by topping Coronado High School junior Kesar Patel. The Lady Dons next compete in the San Diego Section CIF Championships at Admiral Baker Golf Course next Tuesday and Thursday.
