Bump it! Set it! Spike it! All of these terms are familiar to the Cathedral Catholic High School girls state champ volleyball stars. Normally, after their fall season is over, these girls go back to their club teams and get ready to reconvene again in the Claver Center for a new season. However, this year there has been a twist: the creation of the CCHS beach volleyball team.
Junior Rylee Reeder explained how the team was created. “The season was really started by our coach, Kelly Drobeck. She has beach clinics every summer, and some other schools started beach teams in LA, so she wanted to bring it here to our community.”
The girls have already beat La Jolla and Poway High School. They have six teams, each of which consist of two people. You can find these girls practicing on every Monday and Tuesday at the sand courts made by Coast Volleyball Club in Mission Beach and DeAnza Cove.
“Our coaches are our indoor coaches, but they have a lot of beach experience. We also have the head coach from varsity, Kelly Drobeck, and the JV coach, Coach Kane,” said senior beach volleyball team member Ivey Schmitt.
There are a total of eight schools in San Diego, more in LA, and even more in Arizona with beach volleyball teams. The San Diego schools include Santa Fe Christian, LCC, Torrey Pines, Scripps Ranch, Point Loma, and La Jolla, all of which our team will compete against in the two months of their season. The team has games every Thursday and would like everyone to come out and support.
