Biden Addresses Americans

Last night President Biden delivered his first State of the Union address in prime time. The eyes of the nation turned to the President as he battled a land war in Europe, an ongoing pandemic, and economic struggles at home, including rising inflation.

The President struck a firm tone with his speech, reprimanding Russia and again voicing America’s support for Ukraine. Oksana Markarova, the Ukrainian Ambassador to the United States, was in attendance as a guest of First Lady Jill Biden. She received standing ovations from lawmakers and became visibly emotional. At one point Biden asked lawmakers to “stand and send an unmistakable signal, to the world, to Ukraine.” The President also touted the united response of NATO and the West as well as the resolve of the Ukrainian people.

On the policy front, Biden renewed his push for paid family leave and universal preschool and kindergarten. He also called for a child tax credit and a raising of the minimum wage to $15. And as the nation grapples with inflation levels not seen in more than four decades, the President singled out inflation as a top priority for his administration. “My top priority is getting prices under control.”

In a welcome move for many moderates and Independents, much of the President’s speech eschewed policy measures championed by many in his party’s left wing. He advocated for increased police funding, saying of the nation’s police forces that we needed to “fund them. Fund them.” There was no mention of the voting rights bills many progressives are trying to pass, and Biden made only brief mention of climate change.

Many saw the speech as Biden’s attempt to reframe himself as a moderate and again capture the approval of Independents before midterm elections. He emphasized unity and bipartisanship, and outside of comments on Republican tax cuts, steered clear of criticizing the other party.

The President also spoke before a largely unmasked Congress, although attendees were required to test before entering the Chamber. The CDC’s relaxation of masking guidance last week, as well as the guidance of Capitol Hill medical professionals allowed Congress to unmask and display the country’s ‘new normal,’ as Biden declared that COVID-19 “need no no longer control our lives.”

Thirty seven million Americans tuned into the address, with Fox News being the most watched network on Tuesday night, according to data collected by Deadline.
