The Cathedral Catholic High School girls varsity basketball team defeated Bonita Vista High School 77-48 yesterday in its first game of the San Diego Section California Interscholastic Federation Open Division Playoffs.

CCHS (23-6) (9-1) advance to (2-0) on the year against BVHS (18-10) (9-1).

The Lady Dons got off to an early lead and did not look back with solid play down the stretch.

“We did really well distributing and taking care of the ball, and in the second half, we took advantage of our size to put the game away,” CCHS guard Keila Teruya ‘21 said.

The CCHS play during the regular season earned it the top spot in the playoffs, a goal the team has been working for the whole season.

“Getting the number one overall seed was definitely our goal from day one,” Teruya said. “Hopefully, we will be able to not just make a statement in San Diego, but even a run for the state playoffs, too.”

CCHS faces Christian High School next Wednesday, as the Lady Dons look to push its way through the playoffs.
