The Cathedral Catholic High School varsity boys water polo team defeated The Bishop’s School 11-7 in the San Diego Section California Interscholastic Federarion Open Division Championship yesterday at La Jolla High School.

CCHS (20-7) (5-1) kept urs 13-game winning streak alive and stayed motivated during the course of the game against TBS (24-8) (5-1) in a game between a San Diego’s top water polo high schools.

“Throughout the whole game we stayed determined to win no matter the score and that translated into how we played,” CCHS player Tyler Zarcu ‘21 said.

Solid teamwork and offense sealed the deal for the Dons as their 11 goals was too much for the Knights.

“We played together and controlled the counter attack and were moving the ball really well,” CCHS player and University of California, Los Angeles- bound Tommy Gruwell ‘19 said.

A.J. Kuypers ‘19, the CCHS goalie, contributed with many saves over the course of the game and was a key player in yesterday’s victory for the Dons.

“We really relied on our goalie to make some big saves,” Zarcu said.

CCHS had eyes on this game before the season even began.

“This game is all we wanted,” Gruwell said. “We had our sights set on this since summer.”
