One of the most promising players to come out of the 2023 class at Cathedral Catholic, linebacker Victory Johnson has seemed to have a great transition into the Colorado system. Johnson was a 3 star recruit and the number 59 LB in the class of 2023. Prior to committing to Colorado, Johnson picked up offers from Washington, Arizona, Arizona State, and Kansas. According to 247’s Greg Biggins, “He’s a physical player who has a nice edge to his game and one of the best and most versatile defensive players out west.” Playing for two years under coach Sean Doyle, he helped the Dons win the second division state title, with a 36-yard pick six to seal the game. With the appointment of NFL player Deion Sanders as the new head coach at Colorado, a whopping 41 scholarship football players entered the transfer portal due to comments made by the new head coach regarding certain groups of players simply never seeing the field. “Go ahead and jump in that portal” because some positions were “already taken care of”, stated Sanders. However, Johnson did not let this worry him. He stuck to his guns and made the roster for the 2023-24 season.

Upon speaking to Johnson, he stated that “I’ve never worked harder and had more fun at the same time. It’s definitely been a big switch, but Coach Prime and the team have taught me new principles to build my life around.” In the sold out spring game at Folsom field, Johnson picked up 5 tackles on 20 snaps for the Buffs’ defense.

In the most anticipated season for the Buffaloes in many years, Colorado looks to start off their season strong against the runner ups of college football, the Texas Christian Horned Frogs. Some of their big names that just entered the defense along with Johnson include defensive lineman Jordan Domineck, who had 7.5 sacks and 9.5 tackles for loss with 34 tackles for Arkansas in this previous season. Also, linebacker Jeremiah Brown transferred from Jackson state and tallied 46 tackles and 6 sacks as a sophomore in 2022. He will also be a huge addition to the squad. Coach Sanders also brought his son, a quarterback looking to take the starting role heading into the 2023 season.

It will be an exciting year to watch out for Cathedral’s very own Victory Johnson as he steps up to the next level. Make sure to watch out for #57 on the Buffs in the future, as he will for sure make a giant impact on the Colorado defense.
