When most think of the sport of wrestling, they probably think about the WWE or Wrestlemania. But, the true sport of wrestling dates back to the Greco-Roman days; wrestling is actually the oldest Olympic sport. Here at CCHS, most students probably don’t know much about the wrestling team. But, seniors Mitchell January and Cameron Chavez put the team back on the map and even made some school history.
This year was quite the historical year for the wrestling team, especially team captain Cameron Chavez. Cameron is one of the most prolific wrestlers in school history. Among many of the accolades that Cameron achieved was the most wins in school history, a record his older brother Christian once held. Cameron had another speculator season posting more than 40 wins on the year. His teammate, Mitchell January had an amazing season also placing top 3 in CIF. Seniors Will Morse and Scott Warren also contributed, both making CIF.
Since both Mitchell and Cameron were top 3 in CIF, they qualified for San Diego Section Masters. There, both of them continued their seasons by once again going deep into the tournament. Mitchell placed third in his weight class, and Cameron was runner up in his weight class. Because of both of their excellent finishes in Masters, they qualified for the State Tournament. This was a monumental moment for Cathedral wrestling as this is a first time since 1999 a wrestler in school history made State, let alone two wrestlers to make it. Not only the first time a wrestler made it in school history in 14 years, but the first time since Uni became Cathedral Catholic.
This was one successful year for Cathedral Catholic wrestling, one that might not come around again in a while. Hats off to the great seasons and careers of Mitchell January and Cameron Chavez, a bright spot in what hasn’t been the best year for Cathedral Catholic sports.
