The boys basketball team saw their season come to a abrupt end when they lost to arch rivals Saint Augustine in the Division III State Quarterfinals. The Dons played tough throughout the whole game, even taking a two-point lead into the last quarter of play. Unfortunately, the Saints were just too much to handle in the last eight minutes of the game, and the Dons fell 55-45, thus eliminating them from State Playoffs and ending their season. Saints went on to win State.
This loss was particularly tough seeing as the team is mostly comprised of seniors, 10 of the 15 to be exact. However, the future of the program does indeed look very bright as there are some young, promising underclassmen waiting for their chance to shine on the varsity stage.
The boys came into the season with some very lofty expectations after last year’s team took everyone by surprise by winning CIF and making it deep in State. Although this year the Dons couldn’t repeat as CIF champs, they definitely didn’t disappoint. The boys put up an extremely impressive record of 29-5, and went 12-0 in Western League to secure the Western League title. Out of the five times the Dons played Saints this year, the boys came out 3-2; unfortunately, the two losses were in the CIF title game and in State Quarterfinals. Even though the Dons couldn’t pull through against Saints in the end, they played with class and teamwork, something that deserves applause.
So, even though in the end many will think back on this year with the disappointing loss to Saints in State, make sure to look back at the highlights of this season, which are quite numerous, such as the three wins against Saints, Western League, and the Wolf-Pack Horsman Tournament championship. The future looks very bright, and the Dons plan to retool and give San Diego its best next season.
