Cathedral Catholic’s boys tennis team has continued to push through their season with a 9-8 record and a win for every playoff game. The CIF finals are Friday, May 13th, at 2 o’clock against Westview High School at Barnes Tennis Center in Point Loma.
“I think it’s a pleasant surprise that we’re in the finals… we have such a young team this year,” said Coach Ron Marquez.
The season has been filled with tough matches against La Jolla and Westview, but the team has pulled through strong with a win against Poway. The players also won a semi-final on Thursday, May 12th, against Canyon Crest Academy High School.
“A lot of different people stepped up against Canyon Crest,” said Marquez.
The game today against Westview is a rematch for the CCHS team since they previously played and lost to them 16-2. But the team is looking forward to the rematch and putting everything they have into this game.
“The game today is very exciting because everyone is contributing to the win,” said freshman player Anthony Westphal.
The boys have become closer throughout the season and improved on working together. Everyone on the team has had to overcome an injury, but they continue to push forward.
The team has a strong support system, as Father Kelly, Father Martin, and Father Richard come to most games to cheer on the team.
