Cathedral Catholic’s boys varsity baseball team is off to a strong start this 2011 season and hopes to push successfully all the way to CIF. Seniors Randy Wynne, Nick Fornaca, and Daniel Camarena are all acting as co-captains for the team, and they have led the team in five games this season already.
Their first game was against Granite Hills. They ended up losing the game 2-0 as the Granite Hills pitcher threw a perfect game through five innings. The starting pitcher for CCHS was Randy Wynne. Although they lost this game, they have won every other game thus far.
In the Dons’ second game against their long-time rival, Saint Augustine, the team won 10-9. The starting pitcher was Daniel Camarena, and the team ended up being down six to nine in the bottom of the seventh inning. They came back to win, with Nick Fornaca hitting the game-wining base hit.
The next game was another win, as the team went up against Rancho Bernardo. The final score was 1-0. The game was very exciting because RB was ranked 8th in the nation last year. Steven Gonsalves started pitching in the game, and Nico Garbella closed out the last three innings.
The team went on to win its next game against Bonita Vista, 9-3. Then, they once again beat Saints 8-2 and the starting pitcher was Mike Martin.
The baseball team has another game this Friday against Christian High School, where the athletes hope to bring home another win.
