It is the best time of the year, award season! Award shows happen annually around the beginning of the year and recap the most influential movies and music of the past year. To start off the season, the Golden Globes aired in early January. Not only does the Golden Globes highlight amazing movies, but also influential shows from the past year.
This year, comedian Nikki Glaser hosted the award show. Her opening monologue was witty and engaging. Her opening line was “Good evening and welcome to the 82nd Golden Globes, ozempics’ biggest night!” She highlighted some actors and actresses by joking about them, from their appearance to their work.
Throughout the show, she never gave up on her humor. Her comedy show was even nominated for a Golden Globe. Even though she lost, she proved her cleverness and humor throughout the rest of the show.
Junior Avery Wahl spoke about how engaging Nikki was as a host: “I loved the unique aspect that Nikki took to hosting because it kept me interested and most importantly, laughing, which is not something you expect to be doing when watching an award show.”
Movies “The Brutalist” and “The Substance” won many awards this night. Demi Moore won “best performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy” for her lead role in “The Substance.” Not only was it a big win, but she also had the most powerful acceptance speech of the night.
Senior Maya Paeske said this was her favorite part of the whole night: “Every award show, I always look forward to acceptance speeches. Demi Moore’s speech highlighted her perseverance throughout her career which led her to the big win that night.” She continues, “She spoke about believing the negativity she heard about her career for so long. This win proved all of her doubters wrong which is so inspiring to see.”
As streaming platforms grow, so do shows and movies. Two works that won the most awards were “Emilia Perez” and “Shogun,” both of which were popular on streaming services. They were praised for strong acting, engaging storyline, and highlighting different cultures. Many actors who starred in these shows were awarded with individual awards for their phenomenal acting.
As the glamorous night came to a close, the anticipation for this upcoming award season only grew more and more. With many surprising and slam-dunk wins at the Golden Globes, the prediction for the rest of the season on winners is up in the air. The Oscars just announced the nominees for their awards. Audiences are excited to see the results of the show.
All in all, award shows are more than just celebrating the best of the past year, it is also there to introduce new movies and shows to a bigger audience. Senior Mara Alioto states, “Award shows give me the chance to celebrate my favorite movies, but also fill up my watch list for the coming year.”
