Halle Bailey’s ‘Little Mermaid’ Inspiring Young Black Girls Everywhere
Earlier this week, the teaser trailer for the live action ‘Little Mermaid’ came out. The quick trailer is just barely over a minute but has made a difference in so many lives.
In this new ‘Little Mermaid,’ Ariel is played by African American actress Halle Berry which means that the Disney princess Ariel is African American. This makes Halle Berry’s Ariel the now third black princess. The first one was Brandy’s Cinderella in 1997, and then Disney Princess Tiana from ‘The Princess and the Frog’ in 2009.
The new trailer has spiked a lot of interest across social media platforms. Tik Toks were made sharing young black girls reacting to seeing a black princess on the screen. CCHS senior Milan Bayless says, “It’s gonna be really inspiring for little black girls to see a princess like them on the movie theater screen.”
This is super important for the youth because they are able to see those who look like them on the big screen since there are not many black princesses in Disney. The movie is expected to get a lot of praise since the trailer received a lot of attention. Hopefully this movie will create a boost for more black characters.
