Was Coachella 2023 a Bust?

Coachella’s Instagram Page

Months before Coachella, the poster with the artists was announced, Fans of Frank Ocean had high expectations since it was his first performance in years.

Coachella 2023, had been one of the most anticipated events of the year since Coachella 2022 concluded. With headliners like Bad Bunny, Blackpink, and the most exciting person on the line up: Frank Ocean. But, after many TikTok videos, Youtube vlogs, and Instagram stories, there was one large verdict…. Coachella did not live up to its expectations.

The first headliner of the weekend was Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny. Bad Bunny had great reviews because “he stayed true to himself,” (Los Angeles Times). Bad Bunny was the first ever Latin music artist to headline Coachella. The crowds were super packed up to the barricade of his stage. Bad Bunny performed fan favorites like “Titi Me Pregunto,” “La Dificil,” “Moscow Mule,” and “Efectivo.” Not only was his stage presence a wow factor, he also had effects in the sky. There were fireworks throughout the show and he brought out many famous guests. To pay homage to reggaeton roots he brought out Jowell & Randy, and Ñengo Flow. The group all performed “Safaera” together. Then, later in the set Bad Bunny brought out fan favorite rapper Post Malone to perform “La Cancion” and “Yonaguni.” Bad Bunny’s set left Coachella visitors in good spirits for the rest of the music-filled weekend.

Another big highlight of the first day of Coachella was record producer Metro Boomin. There wasn’t a lot of coverage on him and his set before the festival started, but after Friday night, those in attendance for Weekend Two were very excited to attend Metro Boomin’s set for Weekend 2. The theme of the set was heroes versus villains. The screen behind Metro was comic book style superheroes like the Avengers. Metro Boomin brought out some of the best guests all weekend. Rappers Future, Yung Thug, 21 Savage, and Diddy as well as RnB musicians Don Toliver, The Weekend. Metro Boomin, The Weekend, and 21 Savage all performed “Creepin” together which made the crowd go wild. A lot of Billboard hits were performed like “Low Life,” “Escape from LA,” “Bank Account,” “Knife Talk,” “Superhero (Heros & Villians),” and more. The crowd was hype for all of the hit songs and special guests. There wasn’t a lot of coverage on him and his set before the festival started, but after Friday night, those in attendance for Weekend Two were very excited to attend Metro Boomin’s set for Weekend 2.

The most anticipated guest of the whole weekend was probably RnB artist Frank Ocean. After minimal public appearances and no performances in over five years, fans were surprised to see Frank Ocean on the 2023 Coachella poster. Lots of those in attendance for Coachella this year were there just for Frank Ocean. Some spent thousands of dollars on the preparations for the weekend. But was it worth it? Did Frank Ocean deliver?

Fans lined up at the barricade of Ocean’s stage the second the rope dropped, with some fans having to wait over 7 hours in the desert sun for the awaited performance. But as the set time grew closer, tensions were on the rise. Frank Ocean appeared on the stage an hour late. Fans were already disappointed that he was late, but then as the concert kept going, more complaining occurred. Fans were barely able to see the artist and more than half of his set was a “listening party.”

Post Coachella, there were lots of disappointed tweets, memes, and vlogs about Frank Ocean’s performances. The lack of a show, livestream, and all around performance left fans with a bad taste in their mouths. Frank Ocean ended up not performing for Weekend 2 and was replaced with band blink 182.

Was Weekend 1 of Coachella foreshadowing the end of music festivals all together? Will Coachella 2024 have better reviews and a better experience for fans than this year?
