The AP Senior Art class participated in the David Fleet Young Artists’ Gallery competition on Saturday, March 3rd. Out of 44 students from schools all over the county, the jury chose Cathedral senior Carolina Stonehouse as the 1st place winner.

Carolina’s art work, The View, is a painting of a picture she took in Percha, Italy.

Art teacher Ms. Sylvia Weidmann said, “ (Carolina’s painting) is an unusual piece of work; it doesn’t look like a class project, and is more personal and mature.”

The all-Senior and AP exhibit is put together to showcase the talent of high school seniors and AP students from San Diego County. The show was judged by the board members of the San Diego Art Education Association, and the judging was based on the AP art standards: high quality, mastery of materials, and overall composition.

Five high schools participated, with 11 of the 44 students from Cathedral.

Every student presented a unique piece of work.  “I used my imagination to take something normal and ordinary to something that you don’t see every day,” said Cathedral Senior Cristina Cabrera.

The exhibit will be on view until March 25th at the San Diego Art Institute in Balboa Park.
