Boys Tennis

As the spring sports season begins, the boys varsity tennis team is ready to steal the spotlight once again. Mr. Ron Marquez, the varsity tennis team coach, has lead the team through seven games so far.

Despite taking a close loss of 71-69 in its game against St. Augustine High School, the team continues to move forward.

“We have the toughest schedule in the county with our preseason matches against Torrey Pines, Bishops, La Jolla, Coronado, and Rancho Bernardo,” Mr. Marquez said. “We are in a new league this year, the Eastern League, which will be new and exciting for us to play new teams.  Saints has also moved into the Eastern League so we get to continue our rivalry.”

This year’s tennis team has a variety of students participating, ranging from players who are seniors to freshmen.

Charles Qian ‘20 ‘20 is a top player returning this year, coming off his All-Western League year and qualifying for the CIF Individual Championships. In addition, senior leaders will be Nic Wraith and Matt Moldovan will be ready to give their best. While some freshman on the team are Nathaniel Siry and Max Bessozi.

“I didn’t make varsity last year, but I put in a lot of effort during the last couple of months,”  Roberto Ambriz-Escoto said. “I’m very excited to be on the team this year.”

So far, the team has won two impressive matches against San Pasqual High School and Madison High School. The team has an exciting season ahead.

“The team’s goals are to win an Eastern League title and a CIF Division 2 Championship,” Mr. Marquez said. “All of the boys are committed to becoming the best tennis players they can be to contribute to the team.

“Our goal as a team is that everyone improves so they can contribute on the court.”
