On February 19-21, CCHS’s Drama Program performed “Once Upon a Mattress” at the Poway Center for Performing Arts. This story follows the classic tale of a princess being put to an impossible test to see if she can feel a pea under 20 mattresses and be worthy for the prince, better known as “Princess and the Pea.” Our talented Drama students did a great job of incorporating singing, humor, and fun into the show.
Putting this production together was no small task, and required collaboration and effort from every member of the drama program. “We started rehearsals for the production back in October, so this has been about a 5 month long rehearsal process between music rehearsals, dance rehearsals, full run through, and building the set,” says Grace Howard ‘25, who played the lead role Princess Winnifred.
“My personal favorite part of the play is getting to climb the awesome, 10-foot tall bed,” Grace says. The set of the play was incredible, ranging from showing castle to massive beds that, surely, no one could feel a pea under.
When asked what 3 words she would use to describe the play, she said, “Ridiculous, memorable and fun.”
The characters in the play were created to be funny, ironic, and family friendly. “There are so many gags and bits of the play that are just hysterical and fun because it’s a comedy,” says Grace. “I really have enjoyed doing this production and hearing all the giggles that come from the audience.”
Vonn Stenehjem ’25 also had a lead role in the play, playing the Queen. “My favorite part to act was the dance number at the end of Act 1,” Vonn says.
She also explains that this show took extra effort and longer to rehearse than usual, because of the dance numbers. “I ran my own track as well as an ensemble track, so that was also really fun.” Vonn not only played one of the lead roles, but also was the assistant to the director for this production, playing a crucial role in the preparation and the overall success of the play.
I had the pleasure of seeing this play on opening night and had the best time. One thing that stood out to me was how colorful and vibrant the set and costumes were. They did an amazing job of setting each costume apart, while including the theme into all of the outfits.
Being a comedy, the show had so many clever jokes and gags. But I would also say that the show did a great job of incorporating various themes alongside the comedy, such as love and suspense, and it always had you rooting for someone.
One aspect that was especially prominent to me is how the play had some kids from our Options Program. The inclusivity of the play reflected our school’s values of community and acceptance, and it made me so happy to see everyone having so much fun on stage.
CCHS’s Drama program has many more exciting events coming up, such as “Clue The Musical” from February 28 – March 1, and the Spring Musical “Hadestown” from March 27 – 29 and April 2-4. The passion and dedication that goes into these productions are truly inspiring, and I definitely recommend everyone to go to the next play!
