This article is part of a series focused on this year’s motto of Unum: Engage, which highlights how students engage as one in different groups across campus.
The Girls Water Polo team is diving into their season strong. This group of girls represents not just skill but their connection as a team is something that is truly inspiring. From lots of practices to their intense matches, the girls push through their challenges and try to become the best team they can be.
The team is currently 10-3 overall and 4-0 in league, and they have a lot more in store for them for the rest of the season. Now, let’s take a closer look at the team’s journey and their goals.
One of the toughest opponents the team faces this season is from their rivalry with Torrey Pines, a game that always brings intensity and excitement.
Sophomore Ava Grace Nichols shared her thoughts on the matchup: “Torrey Pines is our biggest rival, and that is definitely gonna be our toughest game,” she said. “But we played them in a tournament at the beginning of the season. It was one of our first games, and very close in score, but we ended up beating them 11-10 which was super exciting,” she exclaimed.
“A lot of the girls from both teams play together on a club team so there was a lot of friendly tension during the game, which made it even more memorable.”
Captain Hailey Romano gives us a deeper look into the team dynamic that the girls share with one another: “Our team has a really strong team dynamic and has gotten even closer throughout this season,” she states.
“We all push each other to be the best versions of ourselves and pride ourselves in doing and feeling everything together—the highs, lows, wins, and losses.” This team has a pure sense of unity that is so special and will definitely come in handy as the rest of the season approaches.
For younger players that are looking into joining the team in the future, Captain Amalia Stehly has some advice for them: “I would say don’t be afraid to try new sports. I didn’t play water polo until my freshmen year and I ended up falling in love with the sport.”
Stehly goes on, “Another piece of advice I would give is to just be kind. My motto this year is to always be happy, be kind, and always have a smile on your face because it is my last year and I want to end this year with a bang.” The team has great leaders that positively influence the team!
As the season progresses, the Girls Water Polo team continues to demonstrate their drive to succeed. The team has set the tone for a memorable season and year ahead, the future is bright for these girls.
Not only are they talented, but their team unity is so inspiring, and it definitely a major part in the reason the team is so successful.
