Building a relationship with God is a personal yet transformative journey that looks different for everyone. It is a process of growing in faith, trust, and understanding, often sparked by moments of reflection, challenge, and peace.
In a world filled with distractions and uncertainty, building a connection with God offers a source of strength, guidance, and unconditional love. This relationship isn’t built overnight but through intentional acts of prayer, study, and service. Whether you are just beginning your spiritual journey or seeking to deepen an existing bond, there are several ways to help you draw closer to God and experience the peace and purpose that come with a life of faith.
Prayer is one of the most direct ways to build a relationship with God. It allows for open communication where you can express gratitude, seek guidance, and find comfort during difficult times. Prayer has no right or wrong way of doing it: it can be as simple as a conversation with God.
A relationship with God is not just about what happens in peaceful, individual moments but also about how you live out your faith in the world. Volunteering, supporting those in need, and practicing forgiveness are tangible ways to live out your faith. These actions not only bless others but also strengthen your relationship with God, as you begin to see His work through your service.
Cathedral is lucky to also have plenty of resources for those seeking a relationship with God. There are several spiritual clubs, boys plus girls groups led by our very own priests Father Matthew and Father Paul, one-on-one reflections with the priests, and many different religious courses.
Father Matthew reminds students that “a relationship with God is the backbone of our life.” He emphasizes that “our relationship with our Creator and Savior is the deepest and most fundamental relationship we have.” Students who attend Cathedral are very fortunate to have the opportunity to live out their faith and practice it every day with the help of pivotal role models like Father Matthew.
At Cathedral, you are surrounded by a community that is here to walk alongside you on this journey. Take full advantage of the resources, relationships, and opportunities to grow your faith. God is with you every step of the way, rooting you in His love and leading you to a life of strength, service, and fulfillment.
Mrs. Dunn, a devoted science teacher and Catholic on campus, leaves students with some encouraging words: “Look to the saints and I would look to all the wonderful characters and people in the Bible. Most of them were not perfect people. Most of them were people who’ve done horrible things, who didn’t know God or persecuted God and yet he used those people to bring out his glory. So I would say don’t worry about being perfect, but just as you are. Love God, not to know him, but to truly love Him.”
This quote serves as a reminder that it is in our imperfections, our struggles and our willingness to love that we are drawn closest to God’s grace for each and every one of us.
