This article is part of a series focused on this year’s motto of Unum: Engage, which highlights how students engage as one in different groups across campus.
The Girls Golf Team had an unforgettable season, earning the title of undefeated league champions for the second year in a row. The girls showed up and showed out in their various tournaments, constantly representing our school with amazing drive. Now that their season has come to a successful close, let’s get some insight from the members on how the team was so successful.
Alexa Feliciano ‘26, a vital member of the team, shares how their team dynamic leads to success: “Our team consists of girls who put in the work to shoot the scores we do.” Alexa, along with senior Ellaclair Leedom, earned the title First Team All-Western League for their team over the season. As she explains, “I’m really excited for next year because through this past season, all of us have learned that we have what it takes to achieve our successes. Whether that be we win at a tournament or someone shoots their lowest round, I feel like every one of us is still striving to better themselves each and every day they go out to play.”
Ashlyn Garrigan ‘25 was also crucial to the team’s overall success, winning Second Team All-Western League along with 2 of her teammates. “We really worked on having a good cohesive team- this is often hard to have on a golf team because it is an individual sport. We started working on this bond last year when I was captain and our current captain (Ellaclair) carried that theme through this year as well,” says Ashlyn. “I am a senior, so looking back on my experience on this team, I have loved every minute in it. I made a lot of positive impacts to the team and I feel I worked hard to make sure we were a team. I am so proud of how we did this season and I’m really excited to see what these girls do in the future.”
Setting them apart from other sports teams at CCHS, the girls do not practice as a team. Each and every girl takes time out of their day to improve their skills, which is clearly being reflected on the course. “However, we do schedule practice rounds every once in a while after school where we can just go out there to chat and play. It not only allows for us to bond together more as a team, but we also get to push one another to keep improving as we go along,” says Alexa.
Coach Brandeberry was arguably the biggest contribution to the girls’ success. Winning CIF SDS Girls Golf Coach of the Year, Coach Brandeberry brings so much to the Girls Golf Team. According to Coach Brandeberry, one of the biggest achievements was when “we took home the City Tournament Championship, and all 6 of our girls moved into the top 16 portion of the match play tournament – two of which made it to the finals.”
One girl that stood out was “Ellaclair Leedom, she is committed to San Marcos for golf next year. She shot a season low of 32 at Torrey Pines Golf Course. She placed 2nd individually at City Tournament in both stroke play and match play. She competed as an individual at CIF SoCal Regionals.”
With such a remarkable season, we can expect good things to continue coming from this team!
