This article is part of a series focused on this year’s motto of Unum: Engage, which highlights how students engage as one in different groups across campus.
The Cathedral Catholic Girls’ Tennis team has been on fire all season long. Ranked 4th in San Diego, the girls were 6-2 and took the champion title for doubles and singles at the Western League and City Conference Championship.
The girls also won the prestigious Santa Barbara Invitational in September after placing 2nd in 2023. They were motivated to come back this year to win the whole thing. Junior Aubrey Yonemtisu reflected on their success when she explained, “It was a surreal experience and I am so blessed to have gone through that huge win with my team by my side.”
The girls on the team are all extremely close, and they have formed a sisterly bond over the season. Scarlett Lee, MVP of the season and first Singles team CIF player, explains how the team chemistry helps her “build confidence and know you have people there to support and count on.”
The girls’ team continued to excel this season when they won the Western League for the 3rd year in a row. They later moved on to dominate at the City Conference Western League Championships, capturing both the singles and doubles titles. Aubrey and Scarlett continued on into sectional championships.
These girls have been working hard all season and summer long to train for this season. Yonemitsu shares her preparation for the season: “All the girls on the team did a team clinic on Tuesdays and Thursdays at CCHS the last two weeks of summer.” She went on to talk about her thankfulness towards this opportunity of being on the team: “Our bond is something that is unique to our team, we are able to perform under large extents of pressure knowing that we have each other to fall back on to support us no matter the outcome of our performance”.
This team chemistry is what helps these skilled athletes take their success to the next level while still being able to have fun and enjoy the sport of tennis. These girls have contributed so much to the CCHS Dons Athletics and hope to keep this momentum and motivation going into future seasons.
