With the new school year in full swing, so begins the never-ending question, what about after high school? The four years spent in high school often flash before our eyes and we may feel left to fend for ourselves regarding the college decision process. Luckily, CCHS provides unique, personal, and specific help in terms of college applications, thanks to our wonderful counselors!
Julia Tushaus, Allie Eppers, Elizabeth Bilz, and Cassandra Rodriguez are just a few of the talented counselors on campus focused on the college application process. These fantastic women aim to guide students, especially upperclassmen through the stressful process of college decisions.
College counselor Ms. Tushaus shared that counselors help students through the college process, “from beginning to end,” from when applications open on August 1 to when students commit to a school in May. Counselors make sure to “start communicating how to complete different application guides.”
Additionally, college counselor Ms. Rodriguez kindly explained, “We have an open door policy so we are here to answer any questions that might come up during the application process.” While college applications can feel daunting alone, the counselors are there to give detailed guidance on the application deadlines. Ms. Rodriguez explained that they help students “find the right fit college and identify factors they are looking for in a college environment.”
Tushaus shared the importance of thinking about the college process early because “a few seniors every year say they wish they thought about this freshman year,” whether it is your “GPA for college applications” or “consistent activities over four years.” While it may seem intimidating to worry about your class load and extracurricular activities throughout your time in high school, Ms. Tushaus reassured that “we want kids to do what is right for them and find balance in their schedule.”
When asked about students who feel overwhelmed by it all, Ms. Rodriguez advised, “Research is the biggest thing that can help you understand how this process works because awareness helps relieve stress.”
During our interview, Ms. Eppers shared her hopes for the college counseling program at CCHS, saying, “Our goal is to help limit stress and help students keep in perspective that they are looking for the best fit for you, which is different for any student.”
In her final remarks, Ms. Rodriguez shared to “own your application… try not to compare yourselves to others.” Students need to be aware of the unlimited guidance that the counselors can offer on campus. Students should understand that they are not alone and that it is completely fine to feel uncertain or confused about college decisions. Whatever college path you choose, the college counselors are ready to assist you with open arms.
