This year was a groundbreaking moment in women’s sports at Cathedral Catholic High School. The beginning of the new historic girl’s flag football season took place this year. High schools throughout the United States are stepping into the future by officially embracing girls’ flag football as a varsity sport this year. The tide is turning, and schools around the nation recognize the talent and passion girls bring to the field.
Talking with Junior quarterback Sina Talataina, who is a member of the first flag football team. Sina was motivated to join the team “because all [her] friends were talking about it.” She is a star softball player committed to play at the University of Arizona and thought “football would be a way for [her] to have fun and meet new people.” Along with most of the girls on the team, Sina was drawn to the “social aspects of being part of the team,” but after winning their first game started to take it seriously. Utilizing her skills from softball, she has had a very successful season, and it is rubbing off on her teammates.
The Lady Dons are led by their coaches, Mr. Weigand, Mr. Caro, and Mr. Fillipone, and star standout players are Alina at center, Avalon on defense, and Anna at wide receiver. As the flag football season begins, the coaches and players are working together to create traditions that will leave a lasting legacy for future generations. One of the most important traditions is “to pray before every game” to keep their faith strong and remember who they play the sport for.
Already having an outstanding first season, the Dons are 12-2 overall! Going 6-1 in the Western League, the team is looking forward to making a run in playoffs to end their season on a high!
