Even though winter is approaching in San Diego, the weather truly does not show it. With the average temperature dropping from 74 to 72 degrees, we are looking at some warm months ahead of us. Along with this heat comes an important task: we must care for our bodies by hydrating often.
According to the Mayo Clinic, women need about 2.7 liters of water every day whereas men need approximately 3.7 liters of water daily. Water is the basis of life and it allows people to be functioning members of society.
Furthermore, the SafeCare Medical Center links staying hydrated to “clearer skin, increased productivity, brain boosts, and improved joint and muscle function.” Hydration is the key to a functioning body and it is the one thing that prevents many people from being healthy.
Hydration is a concept that applies right to CCHS students and their focus in class as well as CCHS athletes’ function throughout sports. With over 70% of the entire CCHS body playing sports, these athletes must be properly fueling themselves.
Cathedral Catholic senior Ceci Stapleton is a cross-country athlete who believes that hydration is essential to the team’s victories. Ceci explained how “[she] drinks extra water on game days to boost her performance and recovery after the game.” The human body is made up of more than 70% water, meaning that the best thing we can do for it is provide it with its basic needs.
Ceci also leads the Sports Medicine Club with Alexa Taylor ‘26. When asked about the negative impacts of not staying hydrated, Ceci explained how “dehydration harms flexibility, speed, and endurance, and it ultimately will make you an unhealthy athlete which would harm overall performance.” Not staying hydrated will not do your body any justice and will only harm your health.
Ultimately, staying hydrated has a variety of benefits that can truly change your body. Something just as simple as drinking an extra cup of water daily is a practice that will help your health throughout your life. Especially as San Diego weather continues to be warm, staying hydrated is the best thing that one can do for their body.

This is a really great article and super insightful! I really liked how you got the community involved by an interviewing athlete. I learned a lot about hydration that I didn’t know. Good job!
