The Cathedral Catholic High School varsity fencing team prepares for its season with immense preparation, despite the changes around the squad.

“We prepare for the season in a variety of ways, the most important being drilling, coordination, and conditioning,” CCHS fencer Emily Rotunda ‘20. “We do a variety of drills in order to improve footwork and blade work to get our team back into the swing of things for the season.”

CCHS enters the season with new coaches, head coach Ted Rotunda and assistant coaches Aaron Shebest and Kat Gilcrist will lead the surge for the Dons.

“We expect this year to be a transition year,” Rotunda said. “We have new coaching staff, and each coach brings something to the table.”

Along with new coaches, the Dons begin practice at a different venue than in years past.

“We have also relocated our practice to the Cathedral Catholic campus this year which has its own set of benefits and challenges,” Rotunda said.

The Dons are led by its team captains Emily Rotunda ‘20 and Timothy Elmer ‘21 who look to spearhead the Dons to a successful season.

As CCHS moves into the season, the épée squad hopes to be competitive in county play, especially against fencing rival, La Jolla Country Day.
