On Sunday, April 2nd, the LSU Tigers women’s basketball team won the NCAA Tournament Championships 102-85 against the Iowa Hawkeyes. After Iowa’s upset of the reigning National Champions, South Carolina Gamecocks, it was almost certain that the Hawkeyes would finish on top. But Kim Mulkey and the Tigers had other plans, making this the first basketball title in school history. This also made Mulkey the first women’s basketball coach to win NCAA championships with multiple programs (Baylor; 2005, 2012, and 2019, LSU; 2023).

LSU came into the tournament as the #9 overall seed going into the tournament. Prior to the tournament they had only had two loses; #1 South Carolina (64-88), Tennessee (67-69). On the other hand, Iowa came into the tournament with six losses; Kansas State (83-84), UConn (79-86), NC State (81-94), Illinois (86-90), Indiana (78-87), Maryland (68-96).

Other than the coaching staff’s amazing sense of fashion, when you think of the LSU Tigers, some players that come to mind are stand out freshman Flau’jae Johnson, 5th-year Alexis Morris, and sophomore transfer, Angel Reese, nicknamed “Bayou Barbie ”. Just those three have a total of 3,396 minutes for this season alone.

Reese is known for her post bucket celebrations. After scoring, she has done Tik Tok dances. She has licked her fingers suggesting her bucket was ‘finger licking good’. After winning the Championship, Reese was next to Iowa star player Caitlin Clark. Behind her she did the ‘You Can’t See Me’ gesture and was pointing at her ring finger to express that she was the one getting that natty ring, and not Clark. Reese was called ‘classless’ and ‘unsportsmanlike’ after doing these things. She did the gesture after it was seen that Clark did the same gesture in the semifinals. Professional athletes like fellow LSU Tiger Joe Burrow, Golden State Warrior Steph Curry, and Los Angeles Ram Defensive End Aaron Donald have also been seen pointing at their ring fingers.

Louisville superstar Hailey Van Lith entered the transfer portal and is officially a LSU Tiger. Tune in next season to see the Tigers make another run at a National Championship with this new addition.
