Today, the Dons’ baseball team will continue their league play versus our rivals, the Saintsmen. Saint Augustine’s team has started off well in league thus far with wins over Mira Mesa and Patrick Henry this week. In addition to their two wins in the eastern league, the Saints are having a lot of success this year with a record of 14-4.

“Saints is definitely one of the best teams in the county so the game won’t be easy, but we feel confident nonetheless” said junior outfielder Hunter Reh. The Dons have been struggling as of late, with 3 losses in their last 4 games. Before starting league play, they suffered back-to-back losses in the City Conference tournament versus La Jolla and La Jolla Country Day.

“No doubt we struggled in the tournament, but it was a learning experience. We can only get better over time, and I think this was a good step in that direction.” Reh stated.

Cathedral managed to lose by a one run margin in the game vs. La Jolla but lost by a score of 9-4 versus La Jolla Country Day. In the game vs La Jolla, the Dons managed to give up four unearned runs, meaning that La Jolla’s runs came off of errors by Cathedral.

“We made a lot of mistakes that game as a team-not a lot of communicating, not being focused and things like that. We’re just glad we can put it behind us now.” Reh said.

The Dons began league play a week later, starting off with a win versus Mater Dei (Chula Vista) and a loss versus Scripps Ranch. Junior pitcher Kai Walter said, “The game versus Scripps was tough giving up 9 runs. We need to gain some consistency if we want to succeed the rest of the year. I think at this point that’s the only thing holding us back from being a really solid team.”
