On February 27th, the Dons’ basketball season came to a close as they were upset in the Quarterfinals of the Division 1 playoffs. The #3 seeded Dons played against the #6 seeded Poway Titans and suffered a 67-64 loss in the Claver Center.

The Titans were lead by senior shooting guard Dalton Soffer who scored 26 points and is committed to play basketball at Seton Hall next year. Soffer is averaging 19.5 points per game on the season and leads the Titans in scoring.

“Dalton played a really good game; he was making shots even when he wasn’t that open. He’s a good player and showed that in the game tonight,” said Varsity assistant coach Matt Roy.

Cathedral was led in scoring by junior forward Austin Beech who managed to score 22 points and junior point guard Cameron Moore who scored 16 points.

“It was really hard losing a game like this; we felt we were prepared coming into the game but came up short. I think that this game and season will fuel us to go all the way next year,” said Austin Beech.

The Dons finished the season with a record of 17 wins and 9 losses, going 9-3 in league play as well. Cathedral managed to secure 3rd place in league this season and will look to improve on that next year.

“Every season we’ve been improving more and more. This year was tough because we had a lot of new and young guys so it took us a while to find each other’s strengths and weaknesses. Next year we’ll have already gone through this learning period so it should make it easier,” team captain Reid Johnson said.

The Dons will only lose three seniors this year and will retain its top three scorers for next season with Moore (13.3 P.P.G), Beech (16.6 P.P.G), and Johnson (13.5 P.P.G). With 12 out of 15 players returning next year, the Dons will look to continue their trend of success in basketball.
