In the first game of the season, the Dons varsity boys basketball team couldn’t keep up with the powerful Saint Augustine Saints, who ultimately triumphed and beat Cathedral 72-55.

Cathedral made a run at the end of the first quarter to come within 1 point of the Saints men. Unfortunately, this run was short-lived, for at the end of the half, Saints increased their lead by 5. By the end of the third quarter, they had expanded this lead to 11.

Although the team had room to improve, veteran Dons player Cameron Moore knocked down 19 of the team’s points, along with 6 assists and 5 steals. Cathedral junior Austin Beech also added 13 points.

“We had starters in foul trouble throughout the game, along with poor shooting and turnovers all together,” said Cathedral junior Davis Gabriel. With their loss against Saint Augustine, the Dons moved to 7-6 throughout the year.

Fortunately, the Dons redeemed themselves in an away game against Scripps Ranch. It was an easy win, with the final score being 50-29. This time, the Dons pulled through as junior forward Reid Johnson captured 10 points and 13 rebounds. Teammates Austin Beech and Cameron Moore each scored 9 additional points.

“This time we were successful with knocking down our shots, like the buzzer beater Moore had at the end of the first quarter. We worked together to pull out the win,” said Cathedral junior Jack Vecchio.

The (8-6) Dons, led by Cameron Moore and Reid Johnson, are favored to win this Friday against (3-11) University City. Tip off starts at 7:30.
