Dons’ football season comes to an end

Dons football season comes to an end

Last Friday, the Dons played their last game of the year in the semifinals of the open division playoffs against the #3 seeded Helix Highlanders at Manchester Stadium. The final score was 27-5 in the Highlanders’ favor as the Dons struggled to get anything going on the offensive side of the ball.

Dons’ junior kicker Kevin Boermeister said, “We really couldn’t get any momentum on offensive, and there was not any rhythm either. When we score five points, we can’t really expect to win any football games.”

Boermeister also discussed the Highlanders defense. “Their defense is obviously very good. Even in the first game, they only allowed us to score 9 points so going into the game we knew it was going to be difficult offensively.” Helix’s defense averages 10 points a game allowed, while the Dons average 30 points per game on offensive.

Though the Dons’ season came to a rough end, they were very successful with a record of 10-2 in addition to the #2 ranking in all of San Diego County, only behind Oceanside High School and the #18th ranking in all of California according to MaxPreps.com. (Helix is ranked #16 in California.)

If the Dons had beaten Helix, they would have played in the open division final against Oceanside at Southwestern College on December 6th at 7 P.M. Though the Dons’ season concluded, it is commendable that they went into the semifinals during their first year of being in the open division.

The Dons will be losing 36 out of their 63 players in the next year due to graduation. Kevin Boermeister said he was happy with the overall season of the team. “I thought we had a great season with a lot of ups and not that many downs. We had great players and great coaches, and I really can’t wait for next season to start.”
