El Cid 2/13/98 Dons at Super Bowl

Uni students and teachers were a flutter with Valentine’s Day of 1998 just around the corner. With a two-page spread and two feature stories written on the holiday of love, Uni’s El Cid staff, led by Editor-in-Chief Patrick Finley (currently a sports reporter for the Chicago Sun-Times), covered much more than Valentine’s Day in the February 13th, 1998 edition of El Cid.

As expressed in the Opinions section: Two thirds of Uni seniors were up in arms about the punishment they received for participating in Senior Ditch Day: no jeans on Monday.

However, the biggest news on campus surrounded Uni’s involvement in the halftime show of Super Bowl XXXII. The Dons cheerleaders were featured as dancers for Smokey Robinson, Boyz II Men, Queen Latifah, and others. Some varsity football players acted as moving chess pieces for ESPN commentator, Cris Carter, as he ran through some plays the Packers or Broncos might use in the game.

Besides Valentine’s Day and the Super Bowl, February of 1998 was a special for Don’s basketball as they geared up for the state championship that they would later win.
