Ms. Eugenia Velazquez’s long and successful career at Uni and Cathedral began twenty-three years ago, and she taught Spanish for the entirety. Last year, she taught Spanish 1 and Spanish 2 to freshmen through seniors enrolled in the course.

As news of Ms. Velazquez’s leaving spread throughout the faculty and students alike, students reacted to the event. Sophomore Grant McDonald-Hulen, who was in Ms. Velazquez’s Spanish 2 class before she left, said, “Ms. Velazquez made sure to help students use Spanish in context during class, and it really helped me to learn the language. I’m upset she’s leaving, though I’m happy to see her taking a full time job at USD. It’s still a let-down knowing a great teacher will go.”

Aside from the disappointment among the Dons family, Ms. Velazquez has been given an exciting full-time job at USD and is teaching there currently. Before working full-time, she had been working there for fifteen years at the same time she had been working at Cathedral, juggling two teaching positions. During her part-time job, she taught in the mornings. However, now with a full-time job, she will be able to teach Spanish for the entire school hours.

Not only will she work for USD, but she will also be working to achieve her PhD in Spanish. Ms. Velazquez revealed her nostalgic feelings for leaving Cathedral, and she said, “My two sons studied at Uni, where they got a great education, the same education I want for all of my students.”

A teacher who truly embodied the spirit of both Uni and Cathedral, Ms. Velazquez said, “I am leaving my family, with whom I have been living for the past twenty-three years.” The Dons family wishes her good luck in her future and farewell to one of our veteran Spanish educators.
