Uniform Update

Uniform Update

Cathedral Catholic is considering additions and modifications to the school uniform for next year, but the question remains as to what exactly these uniform changes will be.

The school’s current contract with Sue Mills Uniforms will expire after this year, so administration is looking into Dennis Uniforms as the new provider. Assistant Dean of Students Mrs. Marlena Conroy said, “We were looking for a company that carried the Dickies style pants, and Dennis Uniforms offers that. I feel bad for the girls who are currently uncomfortable in the Sue Mills pants, but there’s not much else to wear on cold days.”

On November 10th, female students on the dress code committee were able to model new uniform possibilities and, several weeks after, male students on the committee did the same.

The dress code committee at Cathedral consists of 13 girls and 7 boys from all four grade levels. Mrs. Conroy said, “I picked students who had expressed an interest in the uniform and would give me an honest opinion about what they thought. I’ll welcome anyone who has a strong opinion or interest, though.”

From the girls, the majority of positive feedback regarded the shorts and pants. Junior Mollie Stehly who wore the navy blue Dickies styled pants said, “They were really comfortable for uniform pants and fit really well. I got a lot of positive feedback from girls of all grades. I think they would be a good addition to the uniforms, and I would definitely wear them again.”

The plaid gray, black, and green skirt also drew a lot of attention. “I thought they were a refreshing new style for Cathedral, seeing that our other skirts get old after a while,” laughed senior Angela Bolanos.

Another new aspect to go along with these skirts is the possibility of putting a logo on the bottom of skirts. This would prevent the skirts from being able to be hemmed to a shorter length.

Another new item that is being considered for the girls uniform is a “skort.” Mrs. Conroy said, “The shorts that are built into the skort make it harder for girls to hike up their skirts and make them shorter.”

The boys who tried out the new items seemed to favor the Dickies shorts in comparison to the Dennis shorts and current Mills shorts. Mrs. Conroy said that the “…feedback received for these shorts was positive and students enjoyed the professional appearance and way they fit.” The general feedback from the Dennis shorts was that they were “not as comfortable and soft as the Dickies shorts.”

Mrs. Conroy said, “Many students mentioned that they like the black color of the pants and shorts that some of the boys tested, even though black will not be an option.”

Senior Teddy Repko, who wore the Dennis pants said that they had a slimmer waist, longer pant legs, and tighter material than the current Mills pants.

To find out what students who wore the new styles for a day thought, the administration distributed to them a survey that contained questions regarding feedback. The survey also asked what they liked and disliked about the considered styles.

As far as polos go, Dennis Uniforms provided their own brand-name polos, but, as Mrs. Conroy said, “Students seemed to appreciate the polos we have now in comparison to those that were tested.

“I love the polos that we have now,” commented Junior Annie Millay. “There are plenty of colors and styles. Personally, I like the long sleeved ones.”

As of now, no formal contract has been signed, but the door to change is wide open.  Mrs. Conroy said, “I’m excited about the students really liking the new styles and finding out their perspective.”

Though there may be a change next school year, the uniforms that are currently worn would still be permitted and sold as part of Cathedral’s dress code.
