Souplantation helps Invisible Children

 Souplantation helps Invisible Children

Cathedral Catholic’s Invisible Children Club is hosting a fundraiser at the local Carmel Valley Souplantation restaurant from 5-8 PM on December 8th to raise money for the Invisible Children “Schools for Schools” program.

Club President Bri Onori explained that the Invisible Children organization aims to aid child soldiers in Uganda who have been abducted and brainwashed by the active and dangerous Lord’s Resistance Army rebel group. The child-abduction conflict has been going on for over twenty-five yearsj, and it is part of the longest running war in African history.

Education improvements are central to the Invisible Children goals. Bri said, “Their mission is to educate the children so they can leave the war behind and start a new life.”

Proceeds from the Souplantation event will be donated to a program called “Schools for Schools,” which encourages American high school students to aid secondary schools in northern Uganda. Specifically, the funds are earmarked for the all-girls Sacred Heart Secondary School in Uganda.

Bri said, “Schools of the United States are raising money to support war-torn schools in Uganda. We’re aiming to provide desks, equipment, and materials to build the schools up.”

In addition to attending the fundraiser, Bri encourages all Cathedral students, especially those interested in world affairs and helping others, to join the on-campus Invisible Children Club, which meets every two weeks in Ms. Geiss’ room in upstairs De Sales Hall.

“I think that because we are a Catholic school and because we are so privileged to go to this school, we should be able to give to other people and use our resources to do what we can,” said Bri. “Even though we can’t go all the way to Uganda to help these people in need, if we can raise money for them, we should.”

The participating Souplantation is located at 3408 Valley Center Drive in the Carmel Valley Vons shopping center. A flyer, which can be found at http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/event.php?eid=143694355681305 must be given to the cashier upon dinner purchase in order to count toward the proceeds.
