The write stuff

The Cathedral Catholic High School National English Honors Society opened The Writing Center earlier this semester as a way for CCHS students with exceptional English skills to tutor students on campus who struggle with English and composition, as well as to spread a love for literature and language on campus.

“All of the students are trained and can help out in all subjects,” NEHS President Melanie Velazquez ‘18 said. “The tutors are here to edit and revise, not to write papers. Having another eye to look at your paper is helpful especially when you’re not sure about it.

“We encourage and welcome everyone to come.”

Many students feel self-conscious about their writing, and they often are embarrassed to ask for help from teachers. To combat those feelings, NEHS has implemented a student-friendly environment in The Writing Center that provides students the opportunity to receive constructive criticism from peers.

“It is my hope that students begin to utilize the center as a place in which they can improve their writing,” NEHS moderator Mrs. Brittney Cairns said. “Writing is always a skill that takes practice and patience, and it is always beneficial to have other people look over one’s writing. I hope students begin to understand the importance of feedback and practice.”

The Writing Center is open every Tuesday and Thursday after school until 3:30 p.m. in Mrs. Cairns’ classroom located in Assisi 210.
