“Crazy For You” brings back Old School Broadway

“Crazy For You” brings back Old School Broadway

It’s the 1930s.  Characters are fun, costumes are elaborate, songs are catchy, dances are popular, and the cast members of CCHS’s spring musical are ready.

Following the adventures of Bobby Child, a 1930s playboy whose dream in life is to dance, Crazy For You is “the most ambitious show we have ever done,” said CCHS drama teacher, Ms. Katie Wilson.  “The musical is a favorite of mine.  I just had to find the right group.”

And by the looks of it, that is exactly what Ms. Wilson did.

Containing only about 55 people, a small number compared to Cathedral’s previous spring musicals, Crazy For You underwent a very selective casting process. As Ms. Wilson put it, only “the best of the best of the best” were accepted.

The show contains an equal number of male and female performers, a feat practically unheard of in high school theatre.  It also contains a balance between talented newcomers, such as senior Ronan Nelson and junior John St. Marie, and experienced veterans, who have the potential to bring the show to the next level.

Ms. Wilson described one of these veterans, junior Justin Haupt, as “a superstar. He has turned from a quiet little chorus boy who loves to sing into a leading man.”  Haupt played Jesus in last semester’s production of Godspell, and is set to star in Crazy For You as the charming lead, Bobby Child.

Senior Mary Grace Sumner will act opposite Haupt as the spunky Polly Baker.  Sumner, who has been starring in CCHS musicals since her freshman year, will finally get a chance to showcase her dancing abilities in this year’s spring production.  “Mary Grace is so solid in absolutely every area.  This musical really showcases all of her amazing talents,” Ms. Wilson said.

More drama veterans include seniors, Olivia Berger and Jason Shutt, and junior, Tim Semenza, all of whom are expected to put on great performances as lead characters.

Berger, who plays the worldly Irene Roth, said, “Students should definitely expect a high energy, dance-oriented show. It’s a comedy and a romance, so there’s definitely something for everyone to enjoy!”

Crazy For You runs from March 28th until April 5th.  With jazz standards straight from The Gershwin Show Book and dance numbers filled with impressive tap, Crazy For You will be “unlike anything Cathedral has ever seen.”

About the Contributor
Alexa Samaniego, Staff Writer
Hi there! My name is Alexa Samaniego, and I'm a sophomore here at Cathedral Catholic. This is my first semester as a journalist, but I've been in love with writing for years. I also love acting, singing, and directing plays I've written. (I'm also a very strong advocate for the Oxford Comma!) In the future, I hope to major in psychology or philosophy, possibly with a minor in theatre. This year, though, my focus is on raising school-wide awareness of the wonderful paper that we are creating here. I am honored to contribute to El Cid.
