Lent gives students the opportunity to grow in faith

Lent gives students the opportunity to grow in faith

It’s that time of the year again, Lent. During this season, members of the Catholic community take 40 days to strengthen their faith, often through the giving up of things unnecessary or adding things to grow closer to God. Whatever you decide to do, just make sure you are aware that doing this is a way to remember the sacrifice Jesus made for us all.

Here are some of ideas of things you can give up:

  • Whining/ being negative
  • Playing games on your iPad during class
  • Checking social media
  • Using cellphones
  • Watching T.V.
  • Getting Starbucks
  • Eating fast food
  • Using the Lord’s name in vain
  • Taking long showers
  • Wearing makeup
  • Using hair gel
  • Curling/ straightening your hair
  • Painting your nails
  • Eating desserts

But, if you feel that giving something up may be very challenging for you, then you can add something to your life.

Here are some of ideas of things you can add to your daily life:

  • Praying more
  • Exercising daily for at least an hour
  • Sending a nice letter to someone you love
  • Eating healthier
  • Going to Church more often
  • Volunteering more
  • Going to Adoration daily
  • Praying the Rosary everyday
  • Keeping a journal of the things you’re thankful for
  • Taking pictures of meaningful things and hanging them in your room
  • Trying harder in school
  • Studying more than you usually would
  • Making new friends
  • Stepping out of your comfort zone
  • Facing a fear

It doesn’t matter if you decide to give something up or add something to your life; you can even combine things from each list. But, whatever you do, make sure you follow through with. Give it 100% and remember why you are doing this and why this season is so meaningful to the Cathedral Catholic community.

My name is Diana Maldonado. This is my 2nd semester at El Cid. I joined last semester of my sophomore year because Mr. Fares recruited me. I joined and instantly loved it.  When I'm not writing for El Cid I love to go out with my friends or spend time with my crazy puppy. I am madly in love with my 3 beautiful nephews who are my life.
