The Cathedral Catholic High School Dons football team beat the Eastlake Titans 35-19 in the CCHS homecoming game last Friday.

“It was a great win,” junior Joshua Espinosa said. “The team had to come out and focus a lot. We made a couple mistakes but we [shook them off] and we won.”

The game had a rough start, with four missed tackles on the Eastlake running back, resulting in a 40 yard gain that put them right on the goal line. The next play led to a touchdown by Eastlake.

After the Eastlake kickoff, the Dons fumbled the ball, and it was recovered by Eastlake, putting Eastlake on the Dons’ 19 yard line. After a few plays, Eastlake had scored another touchdown. The score was 0-14 Eastlake and the win was not looking promising for CCHS.

At the end of the first quarter, the Dons turned the game around with a 30 yard pass to Jack Thompson. With one minute and thirty-one seconds remaining in the quarter, senior Hogan Irwin scored a touchdown for the Dons, making the score 7-14 Eastlake.

After the first quarter, the Dons picked up the intensity and scored with a screen pass, tieing up the game. The second quarter was a constant battle, with CCHS scoring two more touchdowns and Eastlake scoring a few points as well. By the end of the first half, the score was 28-19 CCHS.

Eastlake was on the offense for a majority of the third quarter, but the team never scored. The Dons eventually got the ball back, but threw a pass intercepted by Eastlake.

The Dons’ defense dug deep and regained the ball in four quick plays. CCHS quarterback Tate Haynes avoided three tackles and made a 13 yard run. At the end of the third quarter, the score was still 28-19.

CCHS had the ball in the beginning of the final quarter, and on the fifth play the Dons scored a touchdown. The score was 35-19.

From there on out, the two teams were an even match, with a sack by Eastlake and a fumble recovery by the Dons. It was a good battle by the Eastlake Titans, but CCHS won the game 35-19.

With last week’s win against Liberty High School Patriots and last night’s win against Eastlake Titans, the Varsity Dons now have a record of 3-3. Their next game will be against Damonte Ranch High School in Reno, Nevada this Friday.
