Varsity Tennis

The Cathedral Catholic girls varsity tennis team has won eleven of out thirteen games since the start of the season. The only losses for the team of 16 were to their current rival, La Jolla High School. At a home game on September 21, the team lost 76 to 83, and most recently, on October 7th, 7 to 11.

Referring to the most recent loss to La Jol,zla, junior Catherine Hedrick said, “It was a tough day for singles. If we could have gotten a couple more singles wins, we could have beaten them.”

Losing six of their top players, including Gaby De Simone and Daniella Flores this year, the team has to cope without the extra help. “We are an overall strong team, but we don’t have those certain people there guaranteeing us wins,” said junior doubles player Ceci Mariscal.

Singles player junior Lucy LaCosta thinks the team’s greatest strength so far is its depth, meaning the abilities of each set playing. “We have the most depth out of any team. Our last players (doubles 3) are actually very good.”

“The doubles are really good this year, they rarely lose,” added Hedrick.

According to Mariscal, most other teams have extremely good singles, but terrible doubles, so the advantage in doubles for the Cathedral team is vital to success. “The doubles help us win enough to get to the top, and then to just get a few more singles to win,” said Hedrick.

Another advantage this season is a newfound closeness amongst team members. “We’re all really close as a team this year; we actually hang out outside of school,” said LaCosta.

We all get along, and cheer each other on. We’re really good in that sense,” said Mariscal.

Junior Varsity

Like the Varsity team, the JV girls tennis team has also bonded in the new season, even creating nicknames for each other like “Zoo”, “Socks” and “Whip.”

Our team is getting really close,” said junior Samantha Filips. Junior Francesca Horton added, “After school-wide testing, we all got together and ate at Red Robin. We’re also planning a team sleepover.”

Filips, a first-time JV player, described the season so far, “It’s not extremely competitive; really, it’s just learning the sport.”

“It’s not about winning or losing, it’s about getting better at tennis, because a lot of us haven’t played for a while,” said Horton, who is also on JV for the first time.

Since September, the team has won two games. Currently, the team is focusing on generally improving skill and figuring out player dynamics. “We’re experimenting with different combinations; like for example, some players are good on their own, and on the doubles team they don’t perform as well,” said Horton.

“We have some girls who have really powerful, varsity hits, but they’re not consistent, and then we have some people who are always consistent, but the hits aren’t as hard,” said Filips.

Regarding the remainder of the season, Filips said, “our goal is to just improve, and hopefully win some more.”
