Be Bold, Be Bald! supporters fight against cancer

Be Bold, Be Bald! is a national fundraising event held on the third Friday of October every year. Participants go bald by wearing a bald cap or very boldly shaving their head to honor those who have bravely fought cancer and by raising money to help fight back. Cathedral’s very own Duffy Moyer decided to “Be Bold” and started a team to support these efforts by raising over $1,600 for the Livestrong foundation and by wearing a bald cap to school on Friday, October 17.

Duffy was inspired to take part in this event because she has been around her parents’ foundation, the Moyer Foundation, her whole life. She was recently involved in Camp Erin, which is run by the Moyer Foundation where people from ages 7 to 18 who have lost a loved one to cancer can go to feel a sense of community. The camp is in honor of Erin Metcalf who found out she had terminal cancer and was worried about how her sisters would cope when she had passed.

Helping with the camp made her realize that she wanted to further help spread awareness and honor those who have fought cancer. Duffy said, “I wore a bald cap for the entire day to honor those who bravely battled cancer. Our team, ‘Girls That Go Bald Together, Stay Together,’ rose awareness about this wonderful day, where we wore bald caps to show that we support the fight against cancer.” She recruited a few students including Giovanna Brunetto, Paige Kelly, Dallas Booker, Chris Danner, and Sabrina Pajarillo to further support the campaign.

If you would like to get involved with Be Bold, Be Bald! you can help by fundraising, spreading the word, attending events held on the East coast, and of course wearing a bald cap. You can also participate in the Bold Surpirse video contest by rallying friends and family around someone affected by cancer with a show of support. Sing them a song, dance them a dance, throw them a party or anything else to show your dedication to the cause. Whatever it is, make sure you wear your bald cap and get it all on film. You can submit your video for a chance to a win a $5,000 donation to the participating cancer charity of your choice.
